Two of the biggest afternoons on the Australian calendar land nine days apart this spring. The AFL Grand Final fills the MCG on Saturday 26 September. The NRL and NRLW deciders take over Accor Stadium on Sunday 4 October.

Most of the country will watch both from a couch. And almost nobody will watch either with only one screen switched on.

Count the Devices in the Room

Walk into any lounge room during a final and do a headcount, then a device count. The second number wins, usually by a lot. The television carries the match, while every phone in the room is running something else: a live stat feed, a group chat, a fantasy side that needs a captain swapped before lockout, a page open on Win Spirit casino, where the odds listed beside each fixture give you a quick read on how the rest of the country rates the contest.

None of this is new behaviour. What changed is that broadcasters stopped treating it as a distraction and started designing around it.

The numbers back the shift up. Across the 2026 home and away season, AFL coverage reached a cumulative audience of more than 370 million across Seven, 7plus, Foxtel and Kayo, a sixth straight year of growth. The more telling figure sits underneath that headline: streaming made up 14 per cent of Seven’s AFL audience this year, double the 7 per cent it managed in 2025.

Rugby league tells the same story from a different angle. Kayo streamed 6.4 billion minutes of NRL across the regular season, up 9 per cent year on year, with every single club growing its audience.

The Delay Problem Nobody Warns You About

Here is the thing that ruins more finals than bad umpiring. Streams and broadcasts do not run in sync. Depending on your setup, a stream can sit anywhere from a few seconds to well over a minute behind free to air.

Which means your uncle on the aerial sees the goal first, texts the group chat, and detonates the moment for six people at once.

Fixes, in order of how much effort they take:

  • Zero effort. Agree a chat ceasefire for the last quarter. Someone always breaks it, but it buys you ten minutes.
  • Low effort. Mute the group chat and check it at the breaks. Notification previews on a lock screen are just as capable of spoiling a result.
  • Actual effort. Run a stopwatch test before the game. Have someone on free to air call the exact second the ball is bounced, note the gap, and you at least know how far behind you are.
  • Best result. Get everyone in the room onto the same feed. One source, one delay, no spoilers.

What Deserves a Spot on the Second Screen

Not everything earns its place. A rough hierarchy, based on what people actually keep open once the game gets tight.

Worth it during play:

  • Official league apps, for live player stats and the interchange counts the broadcast skips
  • Fantasy scores, but only if lockout has passed and you can no longer make it worse for yourself

Worth it at the breaks:

  • Group chats and watchalong streams, which are far better company at three quarter time than the ad break
  • Anything requiring you to type more than a sentence

Not worth it at all:

  • Refreshing a ladder that cannot change until the siren
  • Reading match reports about the game currently in front of you

Getting the Room Ready Before the Bounce

A short checklist, because everything on it fails on the day if you leave it to the day.

  1. Log in the night before. Password resets at 2:25pm on Grand Final day are a genuine Australian tradition and a miserable one.
  2. Use the TV app, not casting. Casting from a phone adds lag, drops out when someone takes a call, and dies with the battery.
  3. Check your bandwidth honestly. 4K coverage is available through the finals, and it needs a connection that isn’t already carrying two other streams and a teenager’s download.
  4. Put phones on a charger, not on the arm of the couch. Four hours of stats and chat eats a battery faster than anyone expects.
  5. Sort the food before the first bounce. Nobody wants to be the person in the kitchen when it goes down to the last two minutes.

The old picture of the family arranged in a semicircle facing one glowing box is finished, and it isn’t coming back. What replaced it works better, as long as the room agrees on the rules first.

Sort the delay, sort the logins, and the only thing left to argue about is the football.
