Listen: ‘One of a Kind’ by Port Royal

It was only April when Port Royal dropped their smashing single ‘Rock & Roll Is Dead’. They then dropped their ‘Rock & Roll Is Dead’ music video requiring the largest team they had ever worked with – their arduous efforts were recognised, the clipped was highly received and was added to ABC Rage and MTV Upload playlists. They then went on their biggest tour to date – 15 shows in total where they played to a sold out home-crowd in Brisbane.

Now, without wasting any time, this royal family are back at it again to blow that all out of the park with ‘One Of A Kind’ (out July 20 – listen here) ahead of the release of their sophomore EP, ‘Love, Passion, Satisfaction’ (out August). The EP release will be quickly followed by a whopping 20-date tour spanning throughout August, September, October and November.

Port Royal’s new single, ‘One Of A Kind’, is a crowd-pleasing, slightly adulterated singalong that rouses good vibes contrasted with some darker themes in the lyrics.

The track shows an entirely new side to Port Royal, especially to those who have missed out on their slew of live shows so far. They’ve progressively released heavier rock tracks over the past year and on this new track they are showing the mellow side of their repertoire, influenced and reminiscent of those pop-rock tracks of the 60’s.

For this singalong, there is no need for distorted guitars, heavy licks and fast tempo’s. The track opens much like a ballad would, with vocals and keys, followed by acoustic guitars and beam of joy in the chorus where the whole gang join in to sing, “She’s one of a kind, I don’t know why”. To add the final touch a trumpet fittingly joins in towards the end, making this jovial song.

More details about Port Royal’s sophomore EP will be leaked soon. For the time being, have a look at the band’s massive string of shows over the next four months where they will be conquering a heap of new territory, with plans on making their homecoming show in November at The Triffid bigger and better than their last sell-out show at Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall.
