Premiering on triple j’s ‘Roots’n’All’, Shag Rock’s latest single ‘Double Life’ is marks a new sonic direction for the Brisbane four-piece and the perfect party-starter for their seven date East Coast tour kicking off this weekend.
Continuing their long-standing recording collaboration with Ian Haug (Powderfinger, the church) – which has seen the band achieve over five million streams so far on Spotify – ‘Double Life’ delivers natural progression from the band’s surf-rock roots. Upon first listen, ‘Double Life’ might seem like a song about a failed relationship. Instead singer and guitarist Alex Wilson says it’s about, “the internal battle of writing songs that feel original or songs you think everyone will like…it’s about fueling your ego or not.”
It’s been an emotionally charged, whirlwind month for this normally carefree band of brothers. Upon wrapping up a run of eight Queensland dates with The Rubens and Tia Gostelow, Shag Rock had all of their equipment stolen from their tour van. In a show of resilience (and a testament to the argument for insurance) the gang of four can’t stop won’t stop. They’ve just announced supports for all upcoming shows including Central Coast three-piece Nelipot – who join them for four shows. With their under 18s Brisbane show and Melbourne 18+ show sold out and all other shows selling fast, things are looking up for this rag-tag group of mates.
‘Double Life’ is now available via independent label Airlock Records.
