Naysayers be damned, you don’t go to a FAST & FURIOUS movie and hope to get a Fellini epic, you go along to switch your brain off, watch hot cars, hot stars and hot set pieces show off in front of you. And that’s exactly what FAST & FURIOUS 6 does. It unashamedly embraces its completely ludicrous foundations and just lets ’em fly in this one.. The more out of control the preposterousness gets the more entertaining it is.
When Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel), Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker) and their merry gang of multimillionaires are called back into action via Lawman Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) to track down an elite crew of mobilised thieves they are also doubling the mission to rescue Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) who they thought was dead. Sounds silly – it is – but thank god for that.
With set pieces that cross from South America to London to Spain to Tokyo to one incredibly long runway (and not in that order) FAST & FURIOUS 6 keeps kicking up the action wow factor along its 130 minute trajectory. It’s all in here, street racing, tanks, planes, freeway carnage, impossibly crazy stunts and all the mod cons & super hot cars you could want. It just gets bigger and bigger as it goes along… and when that final hour starts it’s wall to wall action till the credits roll!
Oh and there are girl fights! GIRL FIGHTS!
Justin Lin has assured himself as one of the best action directors working today, he’s as bold as Michael Bay and pushes the action right down your throat. With cinematographer Stephen F. Windon, Lin has fashioned a really fluid and moving film that effortlessly captures the action. These set pieces are technically complicated to say the least and it’s all put together here with such zest. You can tell they had fun making this.
The script, by Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious 4, Fast & Furious 5), is loaded with sentimentality and idiotic posturing but that’s a part of it’s charm. Everyone gets to showcase their character hooks and seriously there are some of the dumbest lines you’ll ever hear in a movie here and man it’s why I love this franchise so much. It’s all camaraderie and machismo. Everyone knows what this franchise is and they just go with it!
Man the franchise film releases of 2013 have really hit the mark this year with IRON MAN 3, G.I. JOE RETALIATION and STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS all delivering beyond their expectations and FAST & FURIOUS 6 is no exception. This is a really entertaining 2 hrs 10 to spend in a cinema and just as this one is about release part 7 is about to go into production.
FAST & FURIOUS 6 releases in AUSTRALIA on JUNE 6, 2013 through UNIVERSAL PICTURES
