U.S. Box Office Weekend Round Up May 24 – 26, 2013 (Fast & Furious Hits Em For 6, The Hangover Kicks In Well, Star Trek Holds In 3rd, A Record Breaking Memorial Day Weekend!)

Fast And Furious 6Well MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND just raised its bar to $323m. That’s a new record for the holiday weekend and man what a number. If there was ever any doubt of the power of the FAST & FURIOUS franchise it was put paid over the weekend as FAST & FURIOUS 6 (3,658 screens) smashed the franchise record and grossed $98.5m for the opening 3 days. Generating a massive $26,935 screen average, all the more impressive considering it’s not in 3d, America has made its choice with a franchise that just keeps getting better and better. Reviews are solid and with another day of weekend trade to go FAST & FURIOUS 6 is gonna smash a $120m+ opening frame.

The Hangover III Poster 4THE HANGOVER PART III (3,555 screens) opened on the Thursday and over the 4 day weekend it took in $54.2m which is less than half the opening weekend of Part II ($117m). there was a lot of chatter about releasing this flick against FAST & FURIOUS 6 (and vice versa) but even though FF6 did near on double the business a $54.2m opening isn’t a disaster. A screen average of $11,931 is a solid result but, unlike FF6, reviews have been pretty savage to the finale entry. With AFTER EARTH and NOW YOU SEE ME releasing this Friday it’s gonna be a big slug to get the guys into this week 2.

star-trek-into-darkness-poster1-405x6003D STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS (3,907 screens), now this is an impressive hold for a $38m week 2 result. It may have fallen 48%, which in of itself is a great hold, but to reap north of $30m against FF6 and HANGOVER PART III – both attracting the STID market – is an absolutely dynamite result. A solid screen average of $9,726 is a great indicator of the strong word of mouth as all the media channels would’ve been dominated by FF6, THE HANGOVER PART 3 and EPIC. The film has now grossed $146.8m and, like the #1 & #2 holders, has such a big challenge this weekend when big Will Smith comes back with AFTER EARTH.

epic3D EPIC (3,882 screens) also performed well with a $34.2m opening weekend. It’s a bit softer than the other franchise starters THE CROODS ($43.6m) and RIO ($39.23m) but given the clout of all the blockbuster franchise releases around it to pull down an $8,810 screen average is a great result. The sun will shine on EPIC now for the next 4 weeks until June 21 when MONSTERS UNIVERSITY opens. It has no competition until then as THE CROODS is setting sail.
