The festival hit of 2012 BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD opened on limited release this weekend in the U.S. on 4 screens (New York and Los Angeles) to a gross of $169k. That gave a screen average of $42.25k per theatre.
To put that in perspective for a performance level – if it were out on 3,000 screens, which is a good average screen count of a wide release movie, that gross would be somewhere in the vicinity of $127m for its opening weekend. Massive! That’s the sort of number that 3D THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN will be aiming at this week when it opens on Wednesday!
The film will never go that wide as the audience is nowhere near that level, but to give you an idea of how strong the locations are for it – this film is an absolute bona fide HIT!
It’s a massive massive result for the little film and I can’t wait to see it here in Australia in September through the awesome team over at ICON FILM DISTRIBUTION.
(This is my #2 I can’t wait to see film behind The Dark Knight Rises!)
