Vancouver alt/pop outfit YOUNGBLOOD released their latest single “Dark Place” in North America today via STEM. The track was produced by Juno-nominated DJ Sleepy Tom (Diplo, Martin Solveig), and will be featured on the band’s forthcoming EP Fantasy Love. The song premiered via Ladygunn, and is now available on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and all major DSPs in North America.
Ladygunn describes “DARK PLACE” as, “…brings all the art-movie vibes — just imagine it on the soundtrack of “Drive,” or “The Neon Demon.” The synth growls will have you listening to it on repeat.”
“’Dark Place’ speaks to the masochistic tendency of repeatedly making the same mistake and not understanding the compromising effects of that until it’s too late,” explains vocalist Alexis Young. “Sometimes you really need to have something completely fall apart and be destroyed before you are able to fully understand its value. It is the thrilling allure of pressing the self-sabotage button and watching what unfolds before you.”
Formed in 2015 as a creative outlet for frontwoman Alexis Young,YOUNGBLOOD has now received global attention for their dichotomous allure, having spent 2017 extensively touring across markets in Canada, Europe, Australia, the US and India. “Better When You’re Close,” released in April as the first single from the upcoming EP, has seen immediate streaming success, racking up over 115,000 Spotify streams in less than three months. The band also performed a sold out show with Bishop Briggs in Vancouver in support of its release, and spent time in Spotify’s Secret Genius Studios in Los Angeles last month writing new music.
Retro-futuristic melodies and siren-like vocals are quintessential to the band’s “intensively lush” arrangements, and their live show is equally infectious, as crowds surrender to their “simultaneously dreamy and vicious” sound, Karen O like frantic energy, and Grace Jones-esque magnetism. Youngblood’s 2016 debut EP, Feel Alright, features five tracks also produced by DJ Sleepy Tom. The first single and title track “Feel Alright” reached # 6 on the Spotify Viral Chart immediately after its release, with the EP itself currently nearing 1M streams.
