Listen: ‘Renew’ by BANFF

Brisbane represents again with BANFF and his stunningly evocative new track Renew. We jumped on the BANFF train when we got our hands on Act of Misacting  and this follow up cements what a talent he is. Crack this on, crank it up and bathe in its warm hues and heart!

Consistently delivering one gorgeous track after another, Brisbane singer-songwriter BANFF (aka Benjamin Forbes) is today ready to share his latest creation ‘Renew’. BANFF will also be touring in November and December, playing shows in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney to support the release.

Speaking about ‘Renew’, Forbes admits the track is “definitely a personal one.”

The track is immediately familiar, yet completely original, boasting a wistful tone. “‘Renew’ kinda talks about the insecurities that I felt as an artist just deciding that I’d launch new music into the world, and waiting to really change the traditional treatment that I’d given all of my songs,” Forbes details. “It’s like a love story with the art of writing songs.”

“I played in bands for years, which is awesome, but sometimes you’ve just gotta break away and really throw yourself out there and challenge yourself,” is how Benjamin Forbes explains his decision to part company with Brisbane band Little Casino in 2014, “and BANFF was the result of me just wanting to become a better songwriter and really take a lot of control over the creative output that I was delivering.”

Shortly afterwards, Forbes found himself in Melbourne at the studio of Tom Iansek (Big Scary, #1 Dads), putting down BANFF’s debut EP, Future Self, which was released mid-2015. All three singles from this EP were picked up for community, national and international radioplay with Stand In Line featured in the Netflix series Degrassi: Next Class, also finding its way onto the TV show’s official soundtrack.

“People seemed to listen to it,” Forbes observes of his early BANFF material. And this immediate success motivated him to continue writing solo material to ultimately pursue “music as a career”.

After taking out the triple j Unearthed competition to perform The Falls Music & Arts Festival in Byron Bay, BANFF showcased at The Great Escape and then toured Europe with Slow Dancer.

Since the release of Future Self, Forbes has recruited an impressive roster of musicians including Adrian Mauro (Machine Age, guitar/synths), Dominic Spooner (bass) and Daniel Puusaari (Cub Scout, drums). “All of those guys have played on this latest release,” Forbes reveals, “and have toured with me across Australia, and internationally. So it was nice to get a band together who had played with BANFF before and understood the sound and what I was wanting to do.”
