Yes, the drought is over in the U.S. as Any Muschietti’s IT launched into cinemas at midnight on Thursday night to the tune of $13.5m. To put that in perspective, that’s the sort of numbers that are reserved for big tent pole releases like Marvel films and franchise pictures.
That positions the film for a north of $80m opening weekend (if not $90m) and with it, records tumble across the board. These are the accolades IT can already lay claim to:
HIGHEST GROSSING MIDNIGHT PREVIEWS R RATED FILM EVER
WIDEST RELEASE STRATEGY FOR AN R RATED FILM EVER – 4,103 screens
HIGHEST GROSSING OPENING WEEKEND FOR AN R RATED FILM EVER
HIGHEST GROSSING OPENING WEEKEND SEPTEMBER EVER
So, based on an $85m opening weekend (that’s being conservative, far be it from me), that positions the U.S. life gross in the $220-$250m+ range. If IT can cross $233m, it will outgross The Exorcist to become the highest grossing horror film of all time. Here’s horror’s top ten!
- The Exorcist – $232.9m
- Get Out – $175.5m
- The Blair Witch Project – $140.5m
- The Conjuring – $137.4m
- Paranormal Activity – $107.9m
- Interview with the Vampire – $105.3m
- Paranormal Activity 3 – $104m
- Scream – $103m
- The Conjuring 2 – $102.5m
- Scream 2 – $101.4m
What a banner year for genre 2017 has been!
Oh, yeah, and the sequel is on the way!
