Heading on down to S-Town (Sydney) for artist Nikkita Ra and her new track Unity. What’s striking about her work, especially vocalling, is that she effortlessly shifts between genres. She can rap like a gangsta, harmonise with ease and deliver a wholly distinctive sound that’s all her. Check her out!
Go, Aussie, Go!
Bio (from Triple J Unearthed):
Nikkita Ra is a deviation from the norm. Born to an American father who is a musician by profession and an Australian mother whose trade is astrology, her art is equal parts musical and conscious stream. Also, like her stock, Nikkita’s sound is varied and not of a particular place or linear style. Instead, its a creation influenced by new school trap and glitch but also old school trip hop and smooth, sparse electronica. Vocally, Nikkita Ra transitions between slick raps and airy RNB tinged vocals to make a familiar yet original blend of musical pallet.
No stranger to the Sydney music scene, Nikkita’s timeline has gone from solo artist, duo with Tash Adams (drummer of She Rex) to creator and front woman of the all girl ensemble She Rex. After 5 years in the band, she returns to her solo roots but her music and outlook has now matured.
Over her career she’s supported bands such as The Preatures, Sticky Fingers, Dune Rats Thundamentals and Talib Kweli, played venues and festivals such as The Metro, Oxford Arts Factory and Bigsound and toured the country with the likes of Stonefield and Wolfmother. Nikkita’s songwriting in all its incarnations has been played on Triple J and most community radio stations around Australia amongst enjoying blog and press rave reviews.
Now Nikkita Ra embarks on a new musical odyssey but this time her suitcase contains more honed and crafted contents from her experiences that came before. Her debut solo release Las Vegas set film clip ‘Our Unity’ is now out and is the first expression of this.
The new Ep ‘Alexis’ is also due out 2017 and will be a looking glass into her private evolution.
