U.S. Weekend Box Office Round Up Fri 5 May – Sun 7 May, 2017

As expected, it was all about one film this weekend and everything else collapsed around it as Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 (4,347 screens) blasted its way to an enormous $145.05m opening weekend on a $33,368 screen average. It’s the 5th highest opening weekend for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, $50m higher (+53%) than 2015’s Guardians of the Galaxy and comes in 18.9% behind Captain America: Civil War‘s $179m opening weekend same time last year. That’s a good news story considering the film cost $200m to produce before publicity and advertising, and positions the film to gross around the $390m mark domestically and the global gross at around $975m. It also scored critically with 82% fresh and audiences handed the film an A Cinemascore.

Yet, of course, when you drop a massive four-quadrant picture in the market place two major things happen: everything in existence gets hammered and other yet-to-release titles run away from the date to protect their optimal earning capacity. GotG 2 has most certainly done that as it’s only major competition is the fourth weekend of The Fate of the Furious (3,595 screens), which fell over with a 57% drop, and grossed $8.53m. That puts the film’s screen average at a deathly $2,372 and will mean that exhibitors will be taking knives to the screens its occupies.

This creates another problem, as The Fate of the Furious falls over and exhibitors demolish it from sessions and screens, it creates a vacuum of screen space in the multiplexes that they will need to fill. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 has no choice but to drop at least 50% next weekend given how massive the opening has been, so what’s new that’s going to plug the holes left by a gutted The Fate of the Furious and a business-correcting juggernaut opening? All eyes turn to King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (bear in mind that sat on a shelf for a long time) and Snatched (An r-rated femme skew comedy with Amy Schumer) to make up the short fall – but will it be enough?

With $207m in the domestic kitty thus far, The Fate of the Furious is looking to come in at around $220m domestically as fresher summer content opens on top of it. That will mean it’ll come in at that $1.25bn global gross we predicted as the film sits on $1.15bn at present.

The Boss Baby (3,284 screens) takes bronze with $6.18m to bring the domestic gross to $156.7m and finally out gross Trolls $153.7m domestic take.

How to be a Latin Lover (1,203 screens) swan dives 57.2% in weekend 2 for $5.25m to bring the life gross to $20.653m.

Beauty and the Beast (2,608 screens) takes $4.94m for its 8th weekend to bring the domestic result to $486m. With $1.185bn in global receipts it’s going to be a fight with The Fate of the Furious for 2017 supremacy!

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (418 screens) drops 68.9% for a $3.242m weekend to bring the gross to $16.18m and making it the highest grossing Indian film release of all time. It is also the highest grossing film of all time in India itself.

Gifted (1,874 screens) takes $2m for its 5th weekend to bring the gross to $19.24m and thus make it the highest grossing independent film release of 2017. With a $1,097 screen average this weekend, it’s pretty much all over red rover for the Chris Evans led drama.

Going In Style (2,033 screens) crosses $40m!

Smurfs: The Lost Village (1,902 screens) crosses $40.5m.

In Cinemas Friday May 12, 2017 – Snatched, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Lowriders, The Wall, The Wedding Plan
