It’s a project that was hot, then was not, and was struggling to find a director for years which got to a point very recently where Paramount put it in the ‘too hard’ basket and popped it on the shelf.
Yet for all it’s turbulence it now looks as though the long gestating, almost dead to rights sequel World War Z 2 has done a massive about face and landed the one and only David Fincher (Se7en, Alien 3, Zodiac, Fight Club, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Panic Room, The Game, Gone Girl) as director with Brad Pitt back to reprise his role as Gerry.
Though Paramount Pictures have officially yet to confirm the move, Variety reports:
After previously taking the film off its calendar, Paramount Pictures looks to be moving forward with a “World War Z” sequel, with David Fincher directing and Brad Pitt back to star, thanks to the studio’s new chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos, according to knowledgeable sources.
While Gianopulos has not officially official greenlit the movie yet, he is expected to do so in coming weeks. This will likely be among the studio chief’s first greenlit movies. Sources say that production would probably begin in the first quarter of 2018.
