Beauty and the Beast Lands an Adults Only Rating in Russia

… All because of an acknowledgement of a gay character. Yep, the Russkies have classified Disney’s Beauty and the Beast live action remake as 16+ or Adults Only as a response to the scene and veritably knee-capping its theatrical box office potential in that country.

It’s not just Russia that’s targeted the film, the Henagar Drive-In Theatre in Alabama are boycotting the film due to the scene, posting on Facebook:

“For those that do not know ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is ‘premiering’ their first homosexual character. The producer also says at the end of the movie ‘there will be a surprise for same-sex couples.’ If we can not take our 11 year old grand daughter and 8 year old grandson to see a movie we have no business watching it,”

The film, which is due to release locally on March 16, is tracking to a $120m opening in the U.S. and features Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Kevin Kline, Josh Gad, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Audra McDonald, Ian McKellen, and Emma Thompson.
