Live Action ‘Mulan’ Names Niki Caro as Director

Another great New Zealand film making export is Niki Caro, who burst onto the scene with the 2002 smash hit Whale Rider and, most recently, with Disney’s  McFarland, U.S.A. and the yet to be released Focus Features project The Zookeeper’s Wife. She;s about to join the ranks of directors shooting live action versions of Disney Animated Films with Mulan.

As THR reports, Disney appointed Caro to the task and, by doing so, will make her the 2nd female director in the history of Hollywood to direct a picture with a budget over $100m. Caro was not the first choice of the studio, they had wanted an Asian director and offered the project to Ang Lee (who passed on it due to scheduling conflicts) and Jiang Wen.
