It’s all about Doctor Strange (3,882 screens) this weekend in the United States as it aims to land at $83m on a massive $21,381 screen average, which puts the release in the same ball park as 2013’s Thor: The Dark World (opened to $85m). The $165m production, which has already grossed $160m internationally, has outdone the opening weekends for Ant-Man, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger and The Incredible Hulk. That positions the film to a $200m+ domestic U.S. gross and the sequel was announced on the end credits of the film so Marvel are banking on it to continue. With an A Cinemascore from audiences and a 90% Fresh critic score, the return business could kick this up into the $220-$240m range.
Trolls (4,060 screens) hands DreamWorks Animation their biggest opening of the year with $43m on a $10,591 screen average, which nudges just ahead of Kung Fu Panda 3‘s $41m opening weekend. The film scored with audiences and critics, too, garnering an A Cinemascore and 74% Fresh at rotten tomatoes. The $125m budgeted production (Seriously, how do these films cost so much money??) should be able to hit a 4x multiplier in the lead up to Christmas and that should put it at around the $170m+ domestic marker.
Hacksaw Ridge (2,886 screens) opens solidly to $15m on a $5,198 screen average. Mel Gibson’s war epic scored with critics earning an 87% Fresh score and audiences are quite fond of it with an A Cinemascore, too. That opening puts the film in line with Enemy At The Gates (Opened to $13.8m/$51m life gross) and Windtalkers (Opened to $14.5m/$41m life gross) and should see the film gross in the $45-$50m range comparatively.
Inferno (3,576 screens) swan dives 59% week on week for $6.4m to bring its total to $26.2m after two weekends play off. OUCH!
The Accountant (2,688 screens) crosses $70m this weekend.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (3,079 screens) limps to $48.9m domestically, this film has pulled up so damn hard and will finish near $60m, 420m behind the original’s $80m gross. Internationally, the film has done $60m so the combined gross is a notch over $100m but it’s still severely disappointing and the likelihood of a third outing is very slight at this point.
Moonlight (83 screens) continues to shine on limited release with another $1.1m in the kitty on a $13,253 screen average.
Loving (4 screens) smashes $170,000 on a $42.500 screen average. The inter-racial relationship true story is sitting on 89% Fresh at rotten tomatoes and should feature in the Oscars race.
