The pre Christmas box office cool off is in full effect with this weekend being the 2nd worst in all 2014 for North America. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One (4,054 screens) took out the top spot for the 3rd week in a row, even with a 62.1% fall week on week, with $21.6m on a $5,328 screen average. Considering nothing of any major level released last Friday there was never going to be much change in the rankings. Hunger has now grossed $257.7m domestically and is still on track for that $310m finish that we predicted when the film opened to $123m. Sitting on $560.5m globally, the movie is amassing a 54% ex U.S. market share, the strongest of all 3 films, even when this will be the lowest performer.
Penguins Of Madagascar (3,775 screens) held 2nd place, slipping 56.4% week on week, to gross $11.1m off a $2,940 screen average. Sitting just shy of $50m domestically, the pre-Christmas holidays is keeping families out of the theatres and you can expect this to jump back up in screen averages in the next 2 weeks when schools break for the festive season.
Horrible Bosses 2 (3,400 screens) slipped 44% week on week to take 3rd with $8.6m off a $2,529 screen average. The film has just crossed $36.1m domestically. The original had passed $70m by the end of its 2nd week by comparison. $50m finish for part 2.
Big Hero Six (3,168 screens) slips 56.8% to take $8.13m and bring its domestic haul to $177.5m. Like Penguins, this will kick back up once schools break for the holidays.
The Pyramid (589 screens), a limited release horror flick, bombed with $1.35m on the back of a malnourishing $2,292 screen average.
In Cinemas Friday December 12, 2014 – Exodus: Gods and Kings, Top Five, Inherent Vice
