Oz Weekend Box Office Round Up Sept 11 – 14, 2014

TMNT 1-SHEET REVIt was a quiet old weekend at the Aussie Box Office with only one film delivering a knock out punch which was, of course, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (492 screens). The flick grossed $4.37m for its opening weekend on top of a kick-ass $2m sneaks weekend before that to bring its domestic result to $6.473m. Very confident numbers and to support it into school holidays, that kicks in this weekend, the turtles are boasting a very healthy $8,881 screen average on near 500 screens. There’s walls of competition releasing Thursday, in particular The Maze Runner and The Boxtrolls, but with $6.5m in the kitty already, TMNT is a $15m here without doubt and could go higher.  If it can stretch its legs to $19m then we will hit U.S. pro rata parity! Lots of legs left in this franchise, baby!

Into The Storm (336 screens) fell by 50% week on week, under the weight of TMNT and generally shite reviews, to gross $997k. It’s a telling sign all is quiet on the box office front when your #2 film can’t even crack a million. Still, the flick fended off the two other newcomers Step Up: All In and The Giver even when it posted a warning bell ringing screen average of $2,968. Sitting on $3.654m, this should be able to cross $5m if it doesn’t get too butchered in sessions from Thursday. Mind you, there a 6 releases going wide into the market place from Thursday and these stats aren’t great so I would safely say the only safe passage in the multiplexes of the holdovers is TMNT. All others look out!

Step Up: All In (340 screens) opens in 3rd with $803k. Yes that’s a bit soft but that business would’ve only been on the weekend so the true test of this puppy will come from Saturday when school holidays kick in. It shouldn’t fall too much by this time next week and I wouldn’t be reading too much into this opening weekend result – I’ve still got $4m on it.

Guardians Of The Galaxy (190 screens) holds 4th with $689k on a $3,628 screen average which is stronger than both Into The Storm and Step Up All In. What does that tell you? There’s still life in this puppy yet. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if GotG holds its own during school holidays in the cinemas that keep it on as there’s still a couple of million left in it. And for the exhibitors, hey it’s on 25% film hire – why wouldn’t you keep it on???

The Giver (206 screens) opens abortively in 5th with $679k but the same rules that hit Step Up: All In apply here. This one is also sporting a stronger screen average than Step Up: All In with $3,295 but the only major warning flag for The Giver is that the wall of new product coming directly targets its market. The Maze Runner being the key title that will bury The Giver in no audience hell. $3.5m finish.

The Hundred Foot Journey (220 screens), as predicted, has passed $10m nationally and should keep on putting along as long as there’s space.

What We Do In The Shadows (50 screens) remains atop the limited ladder with another $157k, a fall of 31% week on week. Sporting a modest $3,147 screen average, the mockumentary has a good chance of turning it on during holidays to get the crossover crowd and after nabbing the audience favourite in the midnight madness category at TIFF over the weekend, there’s plenty of good news to spread about the comedy.

Tarzan (47 screens) bombs for $19,197 or a $408 screen average. The german animated film, dubbed into english, just couldn’t get a foothold.

In Cinemas Thursday September 18, 2014 – The Boxtrolls, The Maze Runner, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, Planes: Fire & Rescue, The House Of Magic, Wish I Was Here, Rock The Casbah, The Infinite Man, Daawat-E-Ishq (19/9), Khoobsurat (19/9), Exhibition On Screen: Matisse (20/9)
