It was a quiet weekend at the U.S. Box Office as summer end so a a last hurrah Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy (3,462 screens) reclaimed the #1 position in week 5 of release with $16.313m. With it the film has also become the highest grossing film of the year in the U.S., beating out Marvel’s Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier and should be able to pass $300m before its out of cinemas. Globally the film has past $547m, tracking at about half of what current highest grosser of 2014 Transformers: Age Of Extinction sits at, which is $1.072bn.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (3.543 screens) continues to impress in week 4 with another $11.75m into the kitty to bring its running total to $162m domestically. The films international rollout will kick in over the coming weeks and with a homegrown result like that, the future of this already sequelised franchise is in good shape.
If I Stay (3,003 screens) rounds out the top 3 with $9.26m for its 2nd weekend. The next in the series of fatalistic teen dreary weepy I’m dying or I’m dead or I’m in limbo or I’ve got terminal pouting syndrome has earned near on $30m so far off an $11m production budget so there’s no complaints about this result. WB certainly haven’t lost on it and I’m keen to see how it faired over the weekend in Australia!
As Above/So Below (2,640 screens) tanks as the next in the long line of horror disasters for 2014 with an $8.342m opening. Guys, found footage is O-V-A-H. Let it go already. Well, yeah there’s that overly flogged aspect and there’s also been no real presence either online or above the board for the Parisian set subterranean horror yarn. Straight to video in Aus, people!
The November Man (2,776 screens) bombs in 6th with $7.66m. The Pierce Brosnan thriller, which was rumoured to become a franchise, fell apart on opening and I reckon you can kiss goodbye a sequel to this. Film went far too wide – should’ve gone into the upscales east and west coast then trickled through the interior down the track.
Opening Friday September 5, 2014 – The Identical, Forrest Gump Re-Issue, The Remaining
