Oz Weekend Box Office Round Up Aug 28 – 31, 2014

predestination-posterGood old Oz followed suit with the U.S. as Guardians Of The Galaxy (465 screens) reclaimed the throne to take another $1.894m and brought its domestic haul to $21.536m. not bad for its 4th week in release – there’s $28m here. Kapow!

The Inbetweeners 2 (307 screens) dropped 50% week on week to gross $1.568m for its 2nd weekend in play. Still sporting a solid $5,109 screen average, it still has life left in it yet and as long as this quartet of sex crazed nerds can hold out, there might just be some spring holiday play off which, for my money, is where it should’ve released anyway. $9m

The Hundred Foot Journey (315 screens) takes $1.3m for its 3rd weekend, off 26% week on week and its life is now $7.78m. This puppy is playing the weekdays, people! So, it might night rise to the top of the charts over the weeekend, but during the week in business hours is where this flick gets the grey rinse in and has homefield advantage over the blockbusters. It plays older and plays female – tick tick! There’s $12m here, I tells ya!

If I Stay (200 screens) opens solidly with $1.089m or a $5,445 screen average. It’s shy of U.S. pro rata, coming in at 6.94%, where the film opened to $15.69m. The film did go out wider (2,907 v 200 here or 6.88% pro rata) so when you look at it in that rate we’re about line ball to the states performance. It’ll do nothing over the weekdays while the teens are in school and kick back up over next weekend. A $3.5m finish top end from me.

Magic In The Moonlight (131 screen) opens with $761,593 or a $5,814 screen average. It’s not too bad but the screen average, whilst solid, indicates the film has been released too wide. 131 prints for a Woody Allen fluff flick is pretty keen jelly bean and I’d hazard a guess if you did it on 100 screens you’d return a very similar figure. This one, like The Hundred Foot Journey, will have exceptional day trade play off this week so you can expect it to hold up in the key upscale houses. $5m.

Predestination (49 screens) in spite of an almost non existent pre-release campaign bar the opening night film at MIFF 2014, manages to reign supreme in the limited release charts with $201,560. That it fended off the high profile of Felony, the other Aussie flick that released, is a miraculous result all things considered. Still, a $4,113 screen average is a bit weaker than it really should be to give this release legs. Pinnacle did the right thing by keeping it tight in terms of screens, but going out in a market with 6 other films doesn’t help things either. $400k finish.

Felony (47 screens) disappoints with $185,429 given the pedigree of the production and one helluva campaign to promote the film. This Aussie crime thriller just couldn’t get out of the shadow of Predestination or Magic In The Moonlight, both of which would’ve been playing in the same complexes as it. But this result makes me think of another, more pertinent, question. Are we bored of crime themed Australian films? It seems it’s all we want to make of late – and there is more coming…

Locke (4 screens) was solid with $21,886 or a $5,472 screen average. Madman’s picking em well when keeping their releases tight.

Legends Of Oz: Dorothy’s Return (159 screens) committed hare-kare with an abortive $63,803 or $401 per screen. That’s gonna hurt!

In Cinemas Thursday Sept 4, 2014 – Into The Storm, Boyhood, What We Do In The Shadows, The Green Inferno, D-Day: Normandy 1944, A Promise, The Grandmaster, Dawaat-E-Ishq, Hermitage Revisited
