Aussie Weekend Box Office Round Up June 20 – 23, 2013 (World War Z Reigns Supreme, Despicable Belts Monsters For 2nd, Uni Is 3rd Choice For Aussies, Mud Has A Smashing Screen Average)

world_war_z_ver4This certainly was the weekend where the undead ruled the world as 3D WORLD WAR Z (464 screens) took the top spot here too with a smashing $6m opening 4 days. That’s 9% U.S. pro rata which, for a horror flick, is an outstanding result. A cracking screen average of $12,939, the highest in the country, is a testament to the strength of the zombie genre and the now assured star power of one Brad Pitt. That puts this pic in the vicinity of $15m+ for life if it can maintain its momentum for this week and going up against Man Of Steel this coming weekend. What a result!

despicable-me-2-poster-2-378x6003D DESPICABLE ME 2 (489 screens) proved that those sensational sneaks results were no flash in the pan as it marauded its way into 2nd place with $5.03m. When you think that school holidays haven’t started yet DM2 earned about 70% of that gross on Saturday and Sunday. A cracking screen average of $10,287 means all good things and my guess is that 75% of the box is in 2D. This puppy is big, really big and wait till this weekend when school holidays start when Gru and the gang charge! From here this has to get to $22m. Even with 3D Epic releasing this week I don’t think it’s gonna stop this powerhouse.

monsters_university3D MONSTERS UNIVERSITY (494 screens) also impresses for 3rd with $3.852m and a screen average of $7,799. It was always gonna be a bout between this and Despicable Me 2 for box office supremacy and I’m sticking with DM2 to win the holidays as the #1 animated flick. When you’re pitching sentimentality against a younger franchise it’s an uphill battle from the outset. Having said that though this should head towards $18m before it bows out which is a smashing result and the best performing Pixar since Cars 2. It’ll be really interesting to see how much of an effect 3D Epic is going to have on this one. I don’t think 3D Epic has the clout to knock this out of the #2 animated flick spot.

Fast And Furious 6FAST & FURIOUS 6 (339 screens) falls by 54% and still earns $2.136m for the weekend to bring its local gross to $23.44m. It’s a super result on a solid $6,302 screen average and as it heads towards $30m, where it should be able to get to, there’s no doubt that this franchise is alive, well and one of the highest grossing film releases of 2013.

The Great Gatsby3D THE GREAT GATSBY (419 screens) comes out in 5th with another strong $1.85m into the kitty for week 4 to bring its gross to $22.14m on the back of a $4,417 screen average. Even as the film weakens it’s mainstream hold, the dominance in the art houses keeps this puppy afloat and you just can’t deny the Baz Luhrmann effect on Australia.
