Aussie Box Office Weekend Round Up May 23 – 26, 2013 (The Hangover Part III Smashes It, Dead Man Down DOA, The Reluctant Fundamentalist Takes The Limited Flag)

The Hangover III Poster 1THE HANGOVER PART III (496 screens) kicked a huge goal for its opening weekend in Australia generating an $8.9m gross with a mammoth $18,001 screen average. It absolutely kicked U.S. pro rata arse by coming it at 16.48%. Totally because it had no FF6 to compete with. But it does have THE GREAT GATSBY to contend with this weekend! Reviews locally mirrored the rest of the globe and this won’t go anywhere near the $30m+ result that PART 2 delivered. It should be able to go north of $20m+ but it’ll want to get its act into gear cause on June 6 FF6 gets here and we all know what that’s gonna do!

star-trek-into-darkness-poster1-405x600STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS 3D (461 screens) held out 2nd spot for its 3rd weekend of release with $1.8m to bring the national gross to $12.73m. It’s 43% off the pace from last weekend (expected with a headlining franchiser like HANGOVER going out by itself) but with a weakening screen average of $3,946 STID has its work cut out for it to get to $17m. Come on Star Trek – you can do it!

Iron Man 3 Version 5IRON MAN 3 3D (250 screens) takes 3rd for another $1.236m to bring its national gargantuan haul to $36.9m. It’s off 43% week on week but man what a result, I’ve said it before, there won’t be a film this year that will beat that figure. Kapow! It’s screen average is still a very healthy $4,948 so you can expect IRON MAN 3 to be around for a few weeks yet and should be able to crack $40m before it finishes up.

Dead Man DownDEAD MAN DOWN (115 screens) absolutely capsized taking in $199.7k  with a screen average of $1,737 in 8th position. It’s a flick no-one wanted and it mirrored the disastrous opening in the U.S. It says a lot about the star power of Colin Farrell I think, he can’t open films on his name (outside of TOTAL RECALL which was a disappointment at the box office but had Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel & Bryan Cranston to back it up) and this puppy will go down to a day session from this thursday and be gone next week.

The Reluctant FundamentalistTHE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST (30 screens) took the flag for the #1 limited release flick in the country with $133k. With a $4,437 screen average, the 3rd highest in the country, this is one terrorist themed film that has struck a chord. Armed with sensational reviews and nice bit of counter programming its been a solid little earner.

Opening In Cinemas Thursday May 30, 2013 – THE GREAT GATSBY 3D, A HAUNTED HOUSE, SINISTER, HAPPINESS NEVER COMES ALONE, DANS THEATER
