Aussie Weekend Box Office Round Up Thu May 16 – Sun May 19, 2013 (Star Trekkin’ Across The Aus Box Office)

stark-trek-into-darkness-banner-600x268Like we predicted last week none of the new entries made a dent on the might of STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS 3D (600 screens) which took $3.2m for the 4 days – bang on what we predicted… Well ok Aza said $3m+… With a screen average of $5,345 Kirk and the gang held the top spot. The film has now grossed $10m domestically and should be able to sail to $16m before it finishes up. From here the film should be able to equalise with the 2009 entries gross.

Iron Man 3 IMAX3D IRON MAN 3 (460 screens) held onto 2nd place, as predicted (ok its the douchebag in me that loves to write that), with $2.15m. With a strong screen average of $4,675 the film has now crossed $35m domestically. This will be the highest grossing film of 2013 for Australia – I just can’t see anything reaching that height on the slate. What a cracking result!

The Call PosterTHE CALL (180 screens) came in 3rd with $874k on a screen average of $4,856. I’m convinced the strong female centric story, Halle Berry’s freaky as shit hairdo and the only horror/thriller on wide release gave the flick the edge to knock out SNITCH. It’ll drop like a stone next weekend though and will finish near on $2m.

snitchSNITCH (186 screens) came in 4th with a disappointing $726,825 on a $3,908 screen average. It was always guaranteed a 3rd choice ranking behind STAR TREK and IRON MAN but the real kicker is that THE CALL knocked it back to 4th. There still isn’t confidence in the market for DWAYNE JOHNSON headliners to open, FASTER fell apart as well, but this release gets it off the shelf and headed to home entertainment land sooner rather than later.

The Place Beyond The Pines 11THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES (64 screens) topped the screen average stakes with a cracking $8,181 for the week off a $524k gross. It’s only off 17% week on week and armed with solid word of mouth and an upscale release strategy the film is really earning its keep. It’s now passed $1.6m nationally and is set to surpass Cianfrances’ previous effort BLUE VALENTINE’s $2m gross.

Opening Thursday May 23, 2013: THE HANGOVER PART III, DEAD MAN DOWN, THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST, WAR OF THE WORLDS LIVE (May 24)
