When you’re 4th entry in a franchise goes off and earns $700m globally you know you’re on a good thing. What makes it even more spectacular is that your director of it (and of its prequel for that matter) had never made a live action film before. So the model works, right? Right. Well that’s exactly what’s been happening in the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE franchise with GHOST PROTOCOL becoming the highest grossing entry in the series. It was directed by Brad Bird (The Incredibles) a first timer at live action films and he knocked it out of the park. Part 3 was directed by J.J. Abrams.
A fifth was always going to happen, it was just a matter of when and news today has it that Tom Cruise and his TC Productions shingle have signed on the dotted line with Paramount Pictures, Skydance Productions and Bad Robot to make MI5.
Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher) is being courted to direct the 5th entry and a start date has yet to be announced.
