ABC America Announces Tentative Plans To Make ‘Star Wars’ The TV Series

Star WarsThe development of a STAR WARS based TV series has been around for years and there was talk a few years back, around the time of REVENGE OF THE SITH, that the show would occur in the gap between SITH and A NEW HOPE focussing on the Organa’s with Jimmy Smits in play. Talk died off until now when ABC, A Disney subsidiary, suggesting tentative plans to develop the show.

With Disney/ABC in full swing on a S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show after they bought MARVEL it seems the next logical step after acquiring LUCASFILM as well. The biggest hurdle on a STAR WARS TV show, as it would be with a S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Show, is the inflated budgets required to service what would have to be a very effects heavy show. Price tag per ep would sky rocket. To give you an idea an episode of GAME OF THRONES can run into the $5m mark and that’s higher than what most major australian films cost to make.

IN an interview with EW Paul Lee, ABC President, said:

“We’d love to do something with Lucasfilm, we’re not sure what yet. We haven’t even sat down with them. We’re going to look at [the live-action series], we’re going to look at all of them, and see what’s right. We weren’t able to discuss this with them until [the acquisition] closed and it just closed. It’s definitely going to be part of the conversation… It’s going to be very much up to the Lucasfilm brands how they want to play it,” he said. “We got to a point here with Marvel, a very special point, where we’re in the Marvel universe, and very relevantly so, but we’re not doing The Avengers. But S.H.I.E.L.D. is part of The Avengers. So maybe something oblique is the way to [approach the Star Wars universe] rather than going straight head-on at it.”
