Aza’s 2 Line Review – Jack Reacher – Kickin’ It Old School. Out With The Digital, In With The Physical & All The Better For It.

Jack Reacher PosterJACK REACHER, based on Lee Childs’ novel ONE SHOT (Which is an introductory chapter into the multi-novel series of the character JACK REACHER), puts Tom Cruise back in tough guy mode. Love him or hate him, Cruise has always been most popular in this sort of genre and given the material here he suits it to a tee.

Without giving much of the plot away the whole set up is after a spree shooting the captured suspect scrawls a note saying ‘GET JACK REACHER’, a former military investigator who simply vanished off the grid, before you can say ‘Run Katie Run!’ Jack turns up and begins investigating what appears to be an open and shut case.

Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote and directed the film, is the man that’s really the winner here. He purposely structured the film in the same vein as those films of the 80’s and 90’s of lone investigators up against some really nefarious big bads. As I was watching this it reminded of flicks like DOUBLE JEOPARDY, THE GENERAL’S DAUGHTER, BASIC, JUST CAUSE, HIGH CRIMES  etc etc (There’s stacks more I could rattle off but you get the drift) And if you dug those pics you’ll have a good time here.

There’s plenty of humour laced throughout and as Cruise swaggers his way through the film there is some juicy one liners for him too. Remember, this is the first in a planned franchise, so you get a nice taste of the enigma that is Jack Reacher.

The film is also handsomely shot, well paced and edited.

JACK REACHER’s trump card, though, is the fact that all the action sequences are physical. There’s no digital effects here, it’s all choreographed and staged. There’s just no way that digital effects will have the same punch as physically stepping out of a rolling car and disappearing into a crowd. You know its real. And that can be said for all the sequences throughout.

Rosamund Pike, Jai Courtney, Robert Duvall, Werner Herzog, David Oyelowo & Richard Jenkins are all solid supports for the flick and if you wanna go back to watch the sort of action thriller that was made before CSI, LAW & ORDER, NCIS etc etc came along and did it every week then sign up here.
