Do any of you remember the god awful William Friedkin flick CRUISING where a young Al Pacino cruised the New York Gay Scene on the hunt for a serial killer. Apparently 40 minutes of the film was cut out to avoid an X rating in the U.S. and James Franco and collaborator Travis Mathews have imagined what wound up on the cutting room floor. This from Travis Mathews Vimeo Page:
In order to avoid an X rating, 40 minutes of gay S&M footage was rumored to be cut and destroyed from the 1980 film, “Cruising.” Inspired by the mythology of this controversial film, filmmakers James Franco and Travis Mathews collaborate to imagine their own lost footage.
Amid the backdrop of a frenzied film set actor Val Lauren reluctantly agrees to take the lead in the film. Val is repeatedly forced to negotiate his boundaries during scenes on and “off camera,” as unsimulated gay sex happens around him. The film itself is constructed as a play with boundaries remaining queer in subject and form. As much a film about filmmaking as it is about an exploration of sexual and creative freedom, “Interior. Leather Bar.” defies easy categorization.
You know how I was talking about a gimmick with THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE? This is essentially the same idea. Take a rumour and make something ‘shocking’ out of it. It should be noted that all the quote banks in the trailer are from opening gay directors too, just for reference.
This did nothing for me – and like with 99.99% of gay cinema or gay themed cinema – if you’re going to make a porno – just make a porno and stop wasting everyone else’s time pretending to be arty.
Here’s the trailer for the film CRUISING.
