Aza’s 2 Line Review – Mansome – There’s A Great Documentary Yet To Be Made On Modern Male Identity. Mansome Goes Half Way There.

I find the subject of male grooming and modern masculinity fascinating.. As do Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Morgan Spurlock. Welcome MANSOME, a documentary that explores the vanity in the modern male. Its shifts from Hollywood comedic actors (the aforementioned 3, Judd Apatow, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis) to doctors and selected subjects in a cheeky wave and whilst this whimsy approach is kinda fun it also detracts from the real meat of the matter.

It covers off moustaches, beards, grooming, body hair, haircuts, metrosexuality etc etc but instead of making some really considered and fully researched arguments MANSOME flimsily throws are ‘here’s what we think, you know, whatever’ and then moves onto the next segment.

It is compartmentalised by Will Arnett and Jason Bateman who are chatting about masculinity while they are at a day spa. It comes off more as an ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT not so funny out take than the comic relief interludes than it intends to be.

MANSOME is ok, but its a missed opportunity and there still is a documentary to be made on masculinity in the modern age. The over reliance on celebrity really detracts from what this could’ve been.

MANSOME is available now on BLU RAY or DOWNLOAD in AUSTRALIA
