WHAT A WEEKEND for TAKEN 2!!! Yep the sequel has come in a smashed the box office for the biggest opening weekend since THE DARK KNIGHT RISES opened. In fact the take for TAKEN 2 was so good that it slaughtered U.S. pro rata and came in at 15.2%. Massive. It’s already outgrossed the original films take at the Aussie Box Office which was $6.2m (and still a solid result for a then not hot leading man Liam Neeson movie) and is easily going to crack $10m for its full opening week. There’s every chance this puppy will finish around the $18m mark – even with a 60% drop next weekend (it will be around there somewhere) – this is the 2nd surprise smash for FOX this year! Boom!
MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE’S MOST WANTED swept into the $20m club this closing weekend of school holidays and what a great result for this, the best in the series. It’s poised to chase ICE AGE 4: CONTINENTAL DRIFT’s $28m Aussie box office result if it can hold the weekend sessions for the next few weeks. There’s still plenty of life left in it yet!
HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA, the little film that could, held up for #3 to close the school holidays on $2.2m to bring its gross to just shy of $9.5m. The U.S. box office smash should pass $10m next weekend and it’s a winner in the respect that its the first Adam Sandler project to gross over $10m since GROWN UPS. Even though the domestic result is well shy of pro rata next to the gargantuan U.S. figure, it did have MADAGASCAR to contend with and make no mistake this HOTEL will be booked out when it hits home entertainment.
LOOPER remained consistent for its 2nd weekend, even under the weight of TAKEN 2, and pulled in $2m for the period. It’s going to crack $7m before the week is out and this little winner is shaping up for a $10m domestic result here. LOOPER’s other major success is that Australia is well ahead of U.S. pro rata on the film at around 16.5%.
DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: DOG DAYS closes out the holidays on a mirroring weekend on weekend box office result with $1.4m. The flick has quietly accumulated $7.2m so far and even at 3rd choice for kids product it’s done great business!
MENTAL released and generated $1m in Box Office for the latest wide Aussie release. It will be interesting to see how this perplexing puppy holds as audiences are really divided on it. But that very reason could see it hold on. From here I’ve got the film pegged at about $4m life but anything is possible.
