I’m a sucker for animation – loves it – in fact Sony Animation made one of my all time faves CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS a few years back (Go check it out, it’s hilarious and there is a sequel on the way) so going into this was a big kid ready to fire.
HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA, which pits Adam Sandler and his cohorts in vocal roles (the first major animated out since EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS), is a deceptively low brow family comedy of an over protective Dracula trying to shelter his 118 year daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez) from the scourge of the world – humans. He built this hotel as a refuge for all monsters and when a human gate crashes the place all hell breaks loose.
Steve Buscemi, David Spade, Fran Drescher, Andy Samberg and Kevin James are just some of the voices in the cast and as the plot unfolds there are plenty of Sandleresque fart gags and naughty jokes thrown in.
What elevates HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA from being just another disposable 90 minute flick is that the film has a really positive message about tolerance. It also doesn’t shy away from adult subject matter like prejudice, racism, death and why its always a good thing to have David Spade invisible.
Sony Animation have kept it contemporary with plenty of modern day pop culture references (the TWILIGHT gag really worked for me), LMFAO features throughout and the final ZING song is totally targeted for the pop charts. The whole thing is very sweet natured and energetic – the comedic action moves at a breakneck pace – and youngens will really respond to it. Whilst the story itself is as predictable as any cartoon offering – HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA is zappy enough to forgive it. I’m surprised at how entertained I was!
