In 1991 Joe Johnston delivered THE ROCKETEER, a comic book adaptation set in 1930’s Los Angeles about a young man who finds a jet pack and uses it to fend off Nazi’s, for Disney Studios. The film starred Billy Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin, Terry O’Quinn, Timothy Dalton and Paul Sorvino.
The film is filled with old Hollywoodisms like gangsters, damsels in distress, that lovely golden hue and it all adds up to a really fun time. The film cost an estimated $40m to produce (imdb) in 1991 – that’s a pretty hefty price tag – and it grossed $46.5m in the U.S. It simply wasn’t enough to warrant a sequel…
Well flash forward to today where Marvel & DC are churning out the goodies and it seems a fire has been lit under the old Rocketeer reboot pot as word is Disney are going to give it another go.
