It’s easy to see why this puppy was up for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars this year – what an engaging and wholly realised character study it is. It plays its immigrant storyline with humanity opting out of the usual dramatic theatrics that the film could’vd taken. MIFF describes it as:
When a respected and well-liked Montreal middle school teacher takes her own life, leaving her pupils traumatised, 55-year-old Algerian immigrant Bachir Lazhar (Mohamed Fellag) is hired as a substitute teacher. As he attempts to help the children cope with the tragedy, he is forced to accept his own distressing past – and realises he has as much to learn from his students as they do from him.
PALACE FILMS are releasing the film on SEPTEMBER 6, 2012 in AUSTRALIA and do mark it in your calendars cause you really shouldn’t miss it – it’s loaded with top notch performances and real heart! Big ticks from me!
