When Wild Animals Battled Aliens At The U.S. Box Office

Whilst Aussies were running loony with Noomi Rapace over the weekend, The United States had a double whammy with not only PROMETHEUS releasing but MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE’S MOST WANTED came into play. Being we’re in the midst of summer tentpoles it’s been a great weekend at the U.S. box office and the winners are:

1. 3D MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE’S MOST WANTED – $60m

2. 3D PROMETHEUS – $51m

3. SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMAN – $23m

Great results all round and with these figures we should see MADAGASCAR 3 gross in that $175m range stateside.

For PROMETHEUS Ray Subers over at Box Office Mojo says:

While it had to settle for second place, Prometheus still earned an impressive $51.05 million in its opening weekend. That’s off from Inception‘s $62.8 million, though it’s a significant improvement over Super 8‘s $35.5 million from the same weekend last year. It’s the second-highest opening of director Ridley Scott’s career behind 2001’s Hannibal ($58 million), and it’s also a new record for the Alien franchise ahead of Alien Vs. Predator‘s $38.3 million (though ticket sales were about on par with that entry).

SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMAN continues to hold ground at 3rd spot. The film releases on June 21, 2012 here.
