Aren’t we all mad for a bit of stylised sci-fi every now and then? God knows I am, so watching PROMETHEUS was like letting my inner geek jump on out and have a floor show all to himself. The film does showcase Ridley Scott at his finest, especially in the much superior first half of the film, where he’s levelling his artistic side with his narrative side. All the great leg work done in the first half does fall apart in the 2nd with too many sub plots and incoherencies that seem to consistently plague the pay off. But you can forgive that for the razzle dazzle of stunning visual effects and ultra stylised set pieces.
PROMETHEUS is a film to ‘look at’ – it’s greatest assets are its visuals – there’s some nice dread and tension build up in the front half and, of course, the knowing references to ALIEN abound. This is the best thing Ridley Scott has directed since MATCHSTICK MEN. The cast are all solid, Rapace holds her own as a new “Ripley” of sorts, Idris Elba and Charlize Theron particularly stood out and then there’s the ever present Michael Fassbender.
Don’t be fooled into thinking this is some intellectually superior masterclass in Science Fiction, it’s not, it’s popcorn entertainment of the highest order. The screenplay is written by the guys that wrote 3D THE DARKEST HOUR. Jump in, switch off and enjoy the ride.
