Aza’s 2 Line Review – Secuestrados (Kidnapped) – A Relentlessly Nihilistic Torture Porn. One Of The Ugliest Films I’ve Seen In Quite Some Time.

I’m no fan of torture porn. Eli Roth’s HOSTEL films are vulgar, woman hating excursions into gratuitous orgiastic violence for no reason. They are pointless, not scary and pervasively banal films.

Whereas Michael Haneke’s FUNNY GAMES was a searing commentary on violence in American cinema – SECUESTRADOS takes a very similar premise, extracts all the commentary and just labours you with 90 minutes of gut wrenching, pointless terrorising violence.

A wealthy family have moved into their new house and on he first night 3 masked men break in and take them prisoner to extract as much money out of them as they can. That is the basic plot, which is pretty much dismissed about 30 mins in to give way for long sequences of terrified girls screaming as they are abused by their tormentors, the occasional visitor brutally murdered and let’s not forget the inevitable rape sequence.

My problem with this film is that the crescendoing violence – especially in the final act – is so brutally and unrelentingly nihilistic that there’s just no point to any of it. The film has absolutely no meaning other than to put a set in place so that the film makers can brutalise 3 people in anyway they see fit.

This an ugly film with brief moments of real tension – but the harrowing, unrelenting nastiness to it just made me feel dirty.
