In Montreal 2011, hip and handsome DJ/dad Antoine (played by Quebec pop star Kevin Parent) seems to have it all – a gorgeous new wife, Rose (Évelyne Brochu), two darling daughters, and a globe-trotting lifestyle in which his creative devotion to pop is satisfied on a nightly basis. The only minor fly in the ointment seems to be his ex-wife, Carole, who isn’t handling their recent split as well, and is tortured by strange dreams she doesn’t understand. Yet, as close to perfect happiness as a man can get, from where does the frightful shadow of darkness that shudders his soul come?
In Paris 1969, a young mother, Jacqueline (played by French pop star/model/actress Vanessa Paradis), without means is abandoned by the father of her young son, Laurent, when it is discovered the boy has Down syndrome. She fights for Laurent to be treated like other children, and not to be recognized as “special”…and the strain of her unconventional fight creates considerable stress and tension for the times.
Master Quebecois director Jean-Marc Vallée (C.R.A.Z.Y.) intercuts these two seemingly unrelated stories together in a pulsating, riveting drama. Love and loss become inextricably entwined, and the resulting achievement led Canada’s 2012 Academy Awards, the Genies, with 13 nominations, more than any other film. – Jaie Laplante
