Well if you haven’t seen TROPIC THUNDER you really should! For the first half of it anyway – it’s genius! A lot of praise circled the film for the un-billed performance of Tom Cruise as studio boss LES GROSSMAN in the film and ever since the film fired at the box office there has been a call to Paramount to develop a film about the character.
In 2010 screenwriter Michael Bacall (21 Jump Street, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World) was put to the task of writing a screenplay about the fictional character and, with help from Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise, has written a script that has been sent to the studio. Collider interviewed him and he had this to say:
“Paramount has the draft and I gather that they’re pretty happy with it. I think Tom Cruise probably has a lot of stuff on his plate right now (laughs) and I think it’ll be a schedule thing more than anything.”
“I wrote it for R because we had precedent with Tropic Thunder. It’s actually a pretty heartfelt story. I had a lot of meetings with Mr. Cruise and Mr. Stiller and it was crazy, it was a blast. I think we came up with some really fun stuff to give you an insight into who the guy is, so I’m hopeful that that’ll get up and running soon.”
I’ll keep you posted as more develops – in the meantime check out the clip.
