On the mainstream front it was safe bets that topped the shop with ALVIN taking gold, this 3rd outing still has the goods and all the right ingredients for a summer family hit – a known brand, a kitschy modern hook and a thrift run time (85 minutes). Also, the mighty SHERLOCK proved that this new franchise is indeed alive and firing on all cylinders, dominating the post kid market for the summer. New franchise boy TIN TIN also impressed in what would easily be considered the toughest of all the franchise sells for Christmas – and yep it sure did deliver! (Can you imagine what the sequel is going to be like!?!).

George Clooney proved he can carry a film with a stunning $10m+ result for the critic fave THE DESCENDANTS (and yep this will be his Best Actor Oscar) and the 140min+ Spielberg war epic WAR HORSE even notched up just under $10m – a great result for a heavy drama in this period.

All hats have to go off, though, to MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL. Here’s a film that has now become the #1 entry in the franchise globally and #2 in the series domestically. Amidst a wall of fresh franchise releases the film managed to forge its way through the summer slaughterhouse and come out at the end with another $9.5m in the bank. It’s looking to finish its run in Oz on $18m – a champion result!

On the limited front WOMEN ON THE 6TH FLOOR held all other competition at bay. Palaces French comedy just sat and played throughout the summer even with strong competition in THE IRON LADY & ALBERT NOBBS. Heading towards $2m now – this will be the first French language film to gross north of $1.7m since A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT.
