Artist Album Profile – MEGADETH – 1985 – 1990

There are those bands you grow up with, those ones that you look back on fondly and realise they were such a part of your formative years that you might actually forget how good they are.. Depending on how old you are reading this I’m sure you can think of a few that spring to mind and the big guy above surely knows I have many and these guys are definitely high in the pecking order of bands that I f*cking love. MEGADETH, outside of the brazen aggressive band name, are still one of the most sophisticated and breathtaking technical metal acts ever to grace the musical stage.

Headed by frontman Dave Mustaine (one of the singular greatest guitar virtuosos on the planet – even if you don’t love metal watching him play is an awe inspiring experience) who came from that other headline act METALLICA, but was unceremoniously dumped from the band in 1983, MEGADETH grew out of Los Angeles with bassist Dave Ellefson. And what came of this union would go down in musical history as one of the most power driven, blistering and aggressive musical acts of the 80’s-90’s.

Like most big enduring acts these days, MEGADETH has gone through many line up changes (Ellefson left and then rejoined the band) but the one constant element is Mustaine for he is the principal songwriter, lyricist, vocalist and lead guitar player. Mustaine was quoted as saying, after being fired from Metallica, “After getting fired from Metallica, all I remember is that I wanted blood. Theirs. I wanted to be faster and heavier than them.” And now, as we take a look at their album collection (13 albums to date!) from 1985 – 1990 it becomes clear that it is mission accomplished.

A blistering, aggressive thrash album that shows off the art of shredding (thanks Pantera) and the sonic speeds that only Mustaine can reach. Click the link below to check out the titular track. Widely known as their rawest and thrashiest album, Business received generally positive reviews and was heralded as one of the angriest metal albums ever produced. – Killing Is My Business

A musical classic – this thrash epic is considered one of the 1001 albums you must hear before you die.  I totally agree – its another blistering riff and solo driven masterwork from the band that pushes speed and technical proficiency to its bloodletting ends. This is a must have album for anyone who loves music.  – Peace Sells

SO FAR, SO GOOD… SO WHAT!?! – 1988

Featuring the cover of the SEX PISTOLS ANARCHY IN THE UK and the seminal classic IN MY DARKEST HOUR (a song written about the loss of Cliff Burton, Metallica’s bass guitarist). A more anarchic collection of songs, cheekier lyrics but still showing the raw power that the band has – by 1988 MEGADETH had cemented themselves as the #1 thrash act in the world. – IN MY DARKEST HOUR

THIS IS THE MUST HAVE ALBUM FOR ANYONE. Possibly the single greatest thrash album ever made (the film clip attached is the 1st track ‘Holy Wars: The Punishment Due’) this 45 minute sonic assault still stands the test of time as being one of those rare works that will NEVER DATE or AGE. Every track is a standout and the breakneck pace interspersed with layered melody work cements the reverential stand I have on this album. Just BUY IT NOW! – HANGAR 18
