Contraband Hits It Big In The U.S. For The Martin Luther King Memorial Weekend!

The U.S. box office is back in form for 2012 with a kick off from THE DEVIL INSIDE smashing a $35m+ opening week and now another non franchise picture has opened and blitzed in the form CONTRABAND, the Mark Wahlberg action thriller, which took out first place with a solid $28.5m. CONTRABAND is the Working Title remake of the Icelandic film ‘Reykjavík-Rotterdam‘ and has given the UK based production house it’s biggest ever U.S. opening.

In other big U.S. box office weekend news Disney’s re-release of  3D BEAUTY AND THE BEAST opened to a staggering $24.7m, this while the 3D version of the film has been on blu-ray shelves for a while and it now looks to give Disney their strongest ever performance in January and the biggest animated January release of all time. After the gargantuan success of THE LION KING re-release and FINDING NEMO on its way – Disney is on a winner.

All hats need to go off to the 3rd place getter which, in week 5, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE GHOST PROTOCOL continues to draw crowds. The film has now grossed north of $474m worldwide making it the 2nd highest grossing in the series (#2 is the highest at $546m) and it’s also TC’s highest grossing effort since Steven Spielberg’s WAR OF THE WORLDS ($591m).

Even the poorly reviewed gospel comedy Queen Latifah / Dolly Parton starrer JOYFUL NOISE pulled in nearly $14m to take 4th place.

JOYFUL NOISE releases in AUSTRALIA through ROADSHOW FILMS on 26 APRIL, 2012.
