Could ‘Sweet Valley High’ Movie Be A Musical?

Diablo Cody, the screenwriting wunderkind behind Young Adult, Juno & Jennifer’s Body has been attached to write this film adaption of much loved book series since 2009. New news sees that Broadway musical scribes Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt have signed on to write some songs for the film. slashfilm reports:

‘Since landing the project (Sweet Valley High) back in 2009, Cody’s described her approach as a “sharp comedy/satire” that will “[be] to the ’80s what American Graffiti was to the [early] ’60s.” It’s a smart way to approach the material, which was (in retrospect, now that I’m not 13) pretty silly stuff but which still brings up strong feelings of nostalgia in people who grew up reading the books as kids.’

Sweet Valley High (Francine Pascal – Author) was a phenomenally popular book series that first debuted in 1983. The stories centered around 16-year-old identical twins Elizabeth and Jessica Daniel and the goings-on in their picturesque (but weirdly murder/kidnapping/evil twin-prone) Southern California town. Sweet Valley High spawned several spin-off series as well as a television show of the same title.
