Two Paul Verhoeven Classics Getting Remade. Robocop & Starship Troopers?

Both films are classics. Truly. If you’ve not seen the uncut x-rated version of ROBOCOP you haven’t lived and if you haven’t see STARSHIP TROOPERS then you haven’t lived.

Firstly ROBOCOP, from the 1987 film, is almost completely set up and will be headed to theatres in 2013 from director Jose Padilha (Elite Squad, Bus 174), with current it-boy Michael Fassbender (Shame, X-Men First Class) taking on the metal helmet hero.Padilha told that his version would focus on ‘a man being turned into a product by a corporation’. Verhoeven’s original while still a classic action sci-fi was littered with biting satire, black comedy and social commentary (as are all his films). The sheer extreme violence of the original (watch I guy melt when toxic waste is poured all over him, or see a guy get torn to shreds in a hail of bullets) was also a purposeful attack on violence in the media – but I won’t get into the film geek theorist side of things here!

In fresh news though STARSHIP TROOPERS, his spectacular sci-fi romp adapted form the comic book back in 1997, is looking to get a reboot. I’d already reported that an animated sequel to the current franchise is coming from SONY Japan, but word on the street is that the franchise is getting a complete overhaul. STARSHIP TROOPERS is also a biting satirical black comedy hidden under a studio action bonanza and gave birth to some of the coolest lines in cinema… “… They Sucked His Brains Out!” – Michael Ironside you are a god. And who could forget Neil Patrick Harris and the big brain bug that looks like a gigantic swollen body part…

Both of these are welcome news if only to bring attention back to the cult originals, which, if you haven’t seen them you really need to get onto it. They truly are cinematic classics, violent, over the top, cinematic classics!
